Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies: fires, serious injuries, crimes in progress, medical emergencies (difficulty breathing, chest pain, unconsciousness). Translation services are available — stay on the line.
Non-emergency numbers: police non-emergency line for non-urgent issues, Telehealth Ontario (811) to speak with a nurse 24/7, Poison Control (1-800-268-9017), Kids Help Phone (1-800-668-6868), Crisis Services Canada (1-833-456-4566).
Hospital emergency rooms: for serious but non-life-threatening issues (broken bones, severe pain, high fever). You will NOT be turned away if you don't have a health card yet.
Walk-in clinics: for minor injuries, infections, prescription refills, rashes, and cold/flu symptoms. Most are free with a provincial health card.
Fire safety: every home must have working smoke detectors on every level and carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas. Create a family fire escape plan.
Save important numbers and memorize your address and nearest intersection.
