Finding a family doctor: search your provincial health authority website, use local physician directories, ask at community health centres, or check walk-in clinics. In Ontario, use the Health Connect Ontario program.
Walk-in clinics: treat cold and flu symptoms, minor infections, prescription renewals, and minor injuries without an appointment. Covered by provincial health insurance for eligible residents.
Pharmacies: Shoppers Drug Mart and independent pharmacies fill prescriptions, provide health advice, offer vaccinations, and send electronic prescriptions directly from your doctor.
Medical tests: blood tests, X-rays, ultrasounds, CT and MRI scans are covered by provincial health insurance when medically necessary. Usually arranged by your doctor.
Telehealth 811: call 24/7 to speak with a registered nurse for non-emergency health concerns, to determine whether a doctor visit is needed, or for information on nearby healthcare services.
Emergencies: call 911 for ambulance. Emergency rooms treat severe injuries, chest pain, breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness, and major trauma.
Carry your provincial health card when visiting healthcare providers. Register with a family doctor as early as possible.
