Basic consumer rights: accurate product information, protection from misleading advertising, fair pricing (advertised prices must be honoured), safe products meeting Canadian standards, clear contract language.
Return policies: there is no federal law requiring returns for change of mind. Businesses must honour their own posted return policies. Always keep receipts and review return policies before buying.
Credit card protections: chargeback protection for undelivered products, purchase protection (90–120 days), extended warranty coverage, and fraud protection with zero-liability.
Cooling-off periods: in Ontario, 10-day cooling-off period for door-to-door sales, timeshare contracts, some gym memberships, and certain long-term service agreements.
Cell phone protections (CRTC Wireless Code): cancel wireless contracts after 2 years without penalty, $50 monthly cap on data overage charges, notifications when approaching data limits.
Debt collection rules: collectors must identify themselves and the debt, no harassment or intimidation, calls during reasonable hours only.
